Leading With Mud on Your Shoes
I start our journey to becoming more inspiring as a leader by exploring the leadership example set by David Speer, CEO and Chairman of Illinois Tool Works (2006—2012). Stories are powerful teachers. David’s story exemplifies what Being the Real Deal means. His values of integrity, humility, trust, respect, and compassion were visible and inspiring every day.
Either You Have It or You Don’t
Integrity is the taproot of inspiring leaders. Are you honest? Do people trust you will tell “the whole truth and nothing but the truth” even if it costs you personally? Being the Real Deal requires leaders to cultivate an environment where honesty is the only policy—where all are expected to speak truth to power. Trust is an outcome built by being consistently honest and transparent about your purpose—your why.
The Heart of the Matter
As leaders, we are inspired by the heart of the matter—a passionate purpose. Generating passion and commitment in others takes more than charisma or fiery rhetoric. Loving the work, feeling valued, and knowing what you do makes a difference are keys to inspiring others. Courage is needed every day to live our values and achieve our why
Paying the Price
Courage fuels the way forward. Until the Covid-19 pandemic made real-time heroes of everyday folks, everyday courage was underappreciated. The bus driver, the grocery clerk, the ICU nurse, the sanitation worker, and the elementary school teacher just to name a few jobs that require courage to show up for work during a global pandemic. Doing your job while facing the threat of a deadly virus is courageous. Sometimes showing up takes all the courage one can muster. Being the Real Deal requires the courage to show up, speak up and lead with integrity.
Everyone Has a Dream
Just as everyone has a story, everyone also has a dream. Being the Real Deal means as a leader you enable others to achieve their dreams. Turning dreams into reality is the ultimate leadership effectiveness measure. Never give up on the dream of equality, freedom, and justice. Never give up on the dream of creating a better world for all. Never give up on being an inspired and inspiring leader who leads with integrity.
